Make a Homemade Bird Feeder
If you think its’s nice hearing the birds chirp outside your window each morning, this adventure’s for you. Making homemade bird feeders is a fun way to get to know which birds are native to your area, and a great way to help featured friends when their food sources are scarce in the wintertime. This adventure’s good for the environment too, as bird feeders can be made using all-natural items from your yard, or recyclable products.
Here are some ideas for homemade bird feeders:
Upcycle an old teacup and saucer set. Start by sanding down the bottom of the cup and the center of the saucers. Then apply a strong adhesive glue to attach the pieces together. Once the teacup and saucer are firmly affixed, use a hot glue gun to attach the bird feeder to a 2’-3’ wooden dowel (which you can find at your local hardware store) Plant the dowel in your yard and add some bird seed. That’s all there is to it!
Bird Feeders Using Basic Pantry Staples. This simple bird feeder only requires three pipe cleaners and a few handfuls of Cheerios, as well as some yarn or string to hand the bird feeder in your yard. To make this bird feeder, thread the Cheerios onto two of your three pipe cleaners. Leave a bit of space at the end of each pipe cleaner so you can twist the ends together, making a circle of Cheerios. Then, take your third pipe cleaner, also string with Cheerios, and lay it across the center of the circle, twisting the ends around the gaps in the circle where our first two pipe cleaners were joined. The third pipe cleaner serves as the perch for small birds to sit on. Tie a 1-2’ piece of yarn to each end of the third pipe cleaner so you can hang your cool new bird feeder from a tree.
